An Exceptional Blue Paua Abalone Mosaic

What makes this edition particularly remarkable is its carefully selected blue-dominant Paua abalone shell, sourced specifically for its unusually rich concentration of blue coloration.

Unlike conventional multicolored Paua abalone mosaics, more than 70% of the Paua abalone checker tiles in this edition exhibit predominantly blue hues, ranging from deep ocean blue to luminous turquoise and iridescent sapphire tones. These carefully selected tiles create an exceptionally harmonious blue-dominant mosaic, beautifully contrasted against the natural brilliance of oceanic white mother of pearl.

The exceptionally blue Paua abalone selected for this edition reflects nature’s remarkable artistry. Paua can take decades to reach their largest sizes, while warming ocean temperatures increasingly threaten the conditions needed for their growth. The careful selection of predominantly blue shell makes this edition especially distinctive.

Exceptional Craftsmanship

Each pen barrel incorporates approximately 240 individually hand-cut checker tiles of natural Paua abalone and oceanic white mother of pearl. Every square is meticulously positioned and secured to the barrel using a specialized cementing technique, ensuring precise alignment and lasting adhesion while creating the distinctive checkerboard design.

The painstaking process is completed by polishing the entire barrel to achieve a rounded, exceptionally smooth, high-gloss finish. No clear coating is required, allowing the natural beauty and iridescence of the nacre to remain the defining feature of the surface.

Each piece of nacre is individually selected for its color, luminosity, and optical character. As light moves across the surface, the checker tiles reveal shifting tones of blue, turquoise, green, violet, pink, and other naturally occurring colors.

Because Paua abalone and mother of pearl are natural materials, subtle variations in coloration, pattern, and texture are inevitable. These distinctions are part of their beauty, ensuring that no two Maestro® Jubilee pens are exactly alike.

Writing Mechanism and Finishing

This twist-action ballpoint pen features gold-plated brass fittings and a smooth-writing gel ink refill with a medium 0.6 mm line width.

Due to natural variations in nacre thickness and bonding materials, the weight of individual pens may range from 37 to 43 grams.
